It is not uncommon to believe that process documentation is a needless investment of time, money, and effort, especially if you have managed your business fairly well for many years without it. But once you experience how standard operating procedures can improve your process flow and help you achieve your business goals, you may think differently.

Consider this – if a repetitive process is not documented, everyone may not be doing it the most efficient way. This could cause some of your employees to miss steps, which can then involve rework. Now, if you have a process document that captures the most efficient way of completing the process and you have checks in place to ensure that your employees are following it, the process will be consistently completed every single time, yielding predictable results.

By documenting your processes, you can significantly reduce, if not eliminate, errors. This helps employees to work faster and finish on time with consistent quality. Even if you thought your processes were running smoothly before you documented them, you may still be surprised to find how effective the documents can be in establishing standards throughout the organization.

If it seems too daunting or costly to spend the time and effort to document all of your business processes, consider starting with documenting your key processes, especially the most used or the ones involving repetitive tasks. You will find that the benefits far outweigh the one-time inconvenience.
