Part 2 – The Method

In my previous post, we explored our approach to instructional writing. Building on that foundation, this second part delves into the method we employ in instructional writing

Drawing on our expertise and years of experience in instructional design, the ASCENT method incorporates proven strategies to ensure information is presented logically and comprehensibly. Here, I am presenting the essential steps and strategies that help ensure instructional content is structured, clear, and impactful. By following these guidelines, our writers are able to produce learning materials that are both informative and easy to understand.

Method for Instructional Writing

Step 1: Define the Objective

  • Identify the purpose of the instructional material.

  • Determine the target audience and their level of technical knowledge.

  • Set clear and achievable goals for what the user should accomplish.

Step 2: Research and Gather Information

  • Collect all necessary data, tools, and resources required for documentation.

  • Verify the accuracy and relevance of the information.

Step 3: Organize the Content

  • Create an outline to structure the content.

  • Arrange the information in a logical sequence.

  • Break each task into sequential steps to guide users effectively.

  • Include hands-on exercises that deepen product knowledge.

  • Incorporate summary sections at the end of major topics to reinforce key points and facilitate a quick review.

Step 4: Write Clear and Concise Instructions

  • Use simple and clear language and ensure that instructions are complete.

  • Use headings, lists, and numbering to make navigation easy.

  • Use images, charts, diagrams, or even video tutorials where necessary to support the text.

Step 5:
Review Content for Accuracy with Subject Matter Experts

  • Edit the content for accuracy and clarity.

  • Check that all formatting and visuals adhere to organizational standards.

  • Get feedback from subject matter experts to ensure comprehensibility.

  • Make necessary revisions based on feedback.

Step 6:
Test the Final Deliverables for Quality Assurance

  • Pilot the content with real users whenever possible.

  • Gather feedback to identify ambiguous steps or missing instructions.

  • Revise content iteratively, to improve readability.

  • Proofread the content to eliminate errors and maintain consistency.

Step
7: Deliver Professional Quality Learning Materials

  • Ensure instructional materials adhere to organizational standards and branding.

  • Present content in a polished format, using consistent layouts and typography.
