Revit 2026 Keynotes: Missing Files, Workarounds, and Loading It

September 19, 2025 Cherisse Biddulph

When adding keynotes in Revit 2026, you may encounter a Keynote Data Not Found dialog box. This occurs because the Revit 2026 content library does not include a keynote configuration file. Instead, Autodesk has provided only a Keynotes_Sample.txt file, which does not include the Construction Specification Institute (CSI) master format system and instead indicates how you can create your own. This .TXT file is located in the following folders:

  • Imperial: C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT 2026\Libraries\English-Imperial\US

  • Metric: C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT 2026\Libraries\English\US

If you do not want to create a keynote classification file from scratch, you can use the previous version (Revit 2025) or download it from the Autodesk Account website ( https://manage.autodesk.com/home/ ), as follows:

  1. Sign in to your Autodesk account.

  1. Select All Products and Services.

  1. Locate Revit in the product list and click View details.

  1. Select Revit 2025 and click Libraries under Available downloads.

  1. Scroll through the content and click the Download button next to your desired content.

  1. Double-click on the .EXE file that was downloaded to launch the installer.

  1. Navigate to the Revit 2025 content libraries and copy the RevitKeynotes_Imperial.txt, RevitKeynotes_Imperial_2004.txt, or RevitKeynotes_Imperial_2010.txt file and place it in your Revit 2026 folder. (The path location mentioned above is the same path for 2025; change out the Revit version.)

How to Load a Keynote File in Revit

  1. In the Annotate tab>Tags panel, expand Keynote and select Keynote Settings.

  1. Close the warning dialog box that displays.

  1. In the Keynote Settings dialog box, click Browse… and navigate to the saved .TXT file.

Note: If you customize the keynote file or need to share it with the rest of your team, you can save it to your company network and set the file location as needed in the Keynote Settings dialog box.
