Civil 3D 2024: Beyond the Basics for Transportation (Webcast Q&A)

Thank you to everyone for attending my webcast where I introduced the ASCENT learning guide, Civil 3D 2024: Beyond the Basics for Transportation.  Click here to view the on-demand recording.

This webcast covered:

  1. The differences between the Essentials and Beyond the Basics guides
  2. Topics within Civil 3D 2024: Beyond the Basics for Transportation
  3. A demonstration of exercises for creating a cul-de-sac

Civil 3D 2024: Beyond the Basics for Transportation is another learning guide of the “Beyond the Basics” level. It complements our Civil 3D 2024 Essentials guide, although this is not a pre-requisite. Anyone with an extended knowledge of Civil 3D will be able to follow the content in the guide which contains the following topics:

  • Alignments
  • Profiles
  • Assemblies
  • Corridors
  • Intersections, Roundabouts and Cul-de-sacs
  • Corridor Adjustments
    • Widenings
    • Superelevations
    • Rehab corridors

Below are some questions that were asked during the webcast:

Q: In the Superelevation section, do you get into creating the XML design file?

A: No, the creation of the XML files (Design Tables) is not covered in this guide. Consult with local DOTs for their requirements and availability or check out the Autodesk Country Kits.

________________________________________________________________

Q: When I create Cul-de-sacs sometimes the Realistic view shows "empty" triangles when I target the CL alignment.

A: Ensure that the regions of the corridors connect properly with no gaps or overlaps. This can be done through adjusting the grips of the corridor regions.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Did Civil 3D revert back to targeting dialog, because your target window doesn't look like mine in 2023.

A: In the Civil 3D 2024.3 dot release, a new version of the Corridor Creation dialog box was introduced. The course shows both the old and new versions of the dialog box.

Q: How long is that ASCENT book/class?

A: The guide has been written to cover a 2-day (16 hour) course. It is recommended that students have taken the Civil 3D 2024: Essentials course or have equivalent knowledge of the basics of Civil 3D and corridor creation.
