Webcast Q&A: Sharing Drawings between AutoCAD 2022 and the AutoCAD web app

Thanks to those of you who attended my webcast about how to Share drawings between the AutoCAD software and the AutoCAD web app on July 29, 2021.  The on-demand recording is available for those who could not attend the live session and for attendees to review the information. Click here to watch the recording.

Note: You should have an active AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT subscription to use the full set of design tools (Draw, Modify, and Annotate) in the AutoCAD web app. If you do not have a subscription, you can open the shared drawings in the AutoCAD web app with viewing and measurement capabilities only.

The following are some of the questions that were asked during the webcast and I hope that these answers will explain this new feature a little further.

----------------

Q: Can you also use layout tabs and mark-up in Paper space?

Answer: Yes, you can work in layout tabs. As in model space, you can use all the editing, drawing, and annotate tools provided in the AutoCAD web app in the Paper space as well.

Q: Is it possible to navigate to the Autodesk cloud environment outside of the Web App? In other words, just through a browser, if only to see a list of file contents?

Answer: You can access the list of all the shared and saved files in AutoCAD web app through a browser.  In your web browser go to web.autocad.com  and log into your Autodesk Account. On the main page you will see the list of shared and saved drawing files.  Clicking on the drawing file will open the drawing in the AutoCAD web app.

Q: Does the Share Drawing command package the ctb files as well?

Answer: With the Share Drawing command, all the relevant referenced files such as Xrefs, font files, blocks, and ctb files are included with the drawing file.

Q: Can multiple people markup the same shared drawing, and are viewable by all participants?

Answer: Only those people can view and markup the files that you have shared the link with. Additionally, to view the drawing files they need to have to be signed into their Autodesk account. To mark up, they are required to have an active AutoCAD subscription.

Q: Is it required that all users who get the link have paid Autodesk subscription? Or can they markup without having a subscription?

Answer: To mark up and to use the Draw, Modify, and Annotate tools provided in the AutoCAD web app, you are required to have an active AutoCAD/AutoCAD LT subscription. New users who do not have an active AutoCAD/AutoCAD LT subscription can only view and measure the drawings in the AutoCAD web app.

Q: Is there a data storage size limit?

Answer: The main drawing file and/or each individual referenced drawing file must be less than 50MB. Complete project files including all documents must be less than 200MB.

Q: Is that 7 day expiration timeframe customizable?

Answer: No. The link to the drawing automatically expires after 7 days from when it was created.

Q: If you send a link to someone else for them to open it in the Web version and they save it to their account - how do you get it back to open it again in your desktop version?

Answer: They can use the Share command in the AutoCAD web app to create a link to the drawing file and then share that link with you.

During my  webcast I was able to provide a quick overview of the Share Drawing tool, however, due to time restrictions I certainly could not go into the details (such using the Trace command in AutoCAD web app). As mentioned, all the information was pulled from our AutoCAD 2022: Update for AutoCAD 2020 & 2021 Users learning guide and AutoCAD 2022 Advanced learning guide which is available for you on Amazon as well as on our ASCENT eStore.
